The first of these to be officially designated `S-Class’, the W116 range, was launched in 1972. Since then, the name has stood for exceptional comfort, innovative technology and, of course, ground-breaking safety systems. Crumple zones, ABS, ESP and the airbag, for instance, all made their debut in an S-Class and went on to become the norm for cars of all makes and sizes. And although that alone means its place in the history books is assured, the S-Class continues to lead the way with new technology and ever higher standards of luxury. First impressions For generations, the S-Class has set the standard for modern motoring with innovations in the fields of comfort, safety and environment-friendly technology that have made it a benchmark for automotive progress.
